New Study Says You Can Slash Dementia Risk With Just 5 Minutes Of Exercise A Day

A new study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health suggests that even modest physical activity, as simple as a 35-minute session of moderate to vigorous exercise per week, may help reduce dementia risk… and get this… even for those considered frail.

The research found that this simple, very manageable exercise routine was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing dementia over an average follow-up of four years.

Exciting Links Between Activity and Brain Health

The study revealed a clear relationship between the amount of physical activity and reduced dementia risk. Participants who logged minimal exercise experienced a 41% lower risk than inactive individuals.

Further, the data indicated that increasing activity led to even greater benefits, with risk reductions of 60%, 63%, and 69% for those engaging in progressively higher weekly exercise durations. Importantly, these protective effects were observed even among older adults who were classified as frail or nearly frail.

Insights from the Research Design

The researchers analyzed data from nearly 90,000 British adults, primarily aged 50 and older, who participated in the UK Biobank project, a large-scale biomedical database and research resource. These individuals wore wrist-worn activity trackers for a week between 2013 and 2015, allowing for an objective measurement of their physical activity.

Health outcomes were then tracked over an average of 4.4 years, during which 735 participants received a dementia diagnosis. The study, published online in January in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, accounted for factors like age and pre-existing medical conditions to isolate the impact of exercise.

Bigger and Broader Implications

Study lead author Amal Wanigatunga, PhD, MPH, emphasizes that even brief periods of exercise… such as five minutes a day… could significantly lower dementia risk. Although the study did not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, the findings align with the growing body of evidence that some exercise is better than none, especially when combating an aging-related disorder that currently has no cure.

These insights are particularly encouraging given that they could potentially influence current public health guidelines, which often recommend 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, a target that can be daunting for many older adults.

Maximizing Brain Health With Minimal Exercise

Dementia, often resulting from Alzheimer’s disease, remains a prevalent and challenging condition, affecting millions and disproportionately impacting those over 85.

However, the study’s findings suggest that lifestyle modifications, including regular physical activity and better management of cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar, offer a promising strategy for prevention. This potential for prevention through manageable lifestyle changes could empower us older adults in the fight against dementia.

The research highlights that even small amounts of physical activity can lead to meaningful reductions in dementia risk, offering hope for accessible and sustainable strategies to promote brain health among older adults.
