OTL: Searching for Sports Entertainment in the NFL Dead Zone

Hamilton point OTL

Happy Friday, Flock. We’re now less than a week from the NFL Combine kicking off in Indianapolis, so for the draftniks among us, there’s at least something on the football calendar fast approaching.

If watching guys run routes in shorts and shuffle around cones isn’t your thing though, we’re still in quite a lull, sports-wise. The O’s are about to start Grapefruit League games down in Florida, if you’re into that sort of thing. As I certainly am, I’ve been participating in the Orioles topic on our message board, and I encourage you to join us.

The other team at least most of Ravens Flock follows, the University of Maryland men’s basketball squad, is providing plenty of entertainment recently. Ranked at #20 this week, their starting five – now known as “The Crab Five” – is the talk of the college hoops world.

Old heads like me are tickled to see a player compared to the great Joe Smith. If that doesn’t get you pumped for March, I don’t know what will.

Finally, fans desperate for that sports fix have been watching the NHL’s Four Nations Faceoff, a new tournament that has replaced their All-Star Game. I can’t ever remember my social media feeds talking about hockey this much. Alas, for those of us Baltimore fans from the US of A, this was just another in a long line of recent gut-punches from dudes with sticks and/or balls.

At least we’re used to it, eh? Congrats to RSR contributors Cole Jackson and Ben Dackiw…hosers.

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy will be wrapping up around this time next year. Maybe the good guys can get their revenge on a larger stage.

BUT WHAT ABOUT FOOTBAW?!

I hear you. The best I can offer is this: Kyle Hamilton came in at #14 on PFF’s Top 101 list…

…and Tony and Brian got together to record a must-listen podcast to get you ready for the Ravens’ offseason team management work.

The Front Office Podcast: Ravens 2025 Salary Cap Preview

Topics included:

• 2:00 Breaking News Regarding the NFL Salary Cap
• 2:45 The Ravens Current Cap Situation
• 6:20 The critical Rule of 51
• 11:00 Pre or Post June 1 and the effects on Justin Tucker
• 17:10 The Ravens Unrestricted Free Agents
• 22:35 Why are the Ravens always up against the cap?
• 26:55 Creating cap space for needs in free agency
• 32:25 How much cap space could the Ravens realistically create?
• 40:15 What to do with Mark Andrews? Isaiah Likely

Spend some of your Friday listening to that, and your football jones should be well and satisfied, at least for a little bit.
