Chicago Bears request interview with former divisional rival quarterback

New Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is quickly building a very impressive coaching staff. He has currently brought in former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen, Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer Al Harris, veteran NFL wide receiver Antwan Randle El, young offensive mind Declan Doyle, and brought back special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.
It seems there is a major recurring theme in some of the coaches Johnson is hiring: coaches with years of NFL playing experience.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, it looks like the Chicago Bears requested an interview with another former NFL player.
“#Commanders assistant QB coach David Blough has a request from the #Jets to interview for their QB coach jobs as well as a request from the #Bears for passing game coordinator, sources say. Blough, 29, is garnering attention only one year into his coaching career. ”
David Blough played for the Detroit Lions from 2019-2021, most notably starting for the Lions during the final five games of the 2019 season. Diehard Chicago Bears fans might remember when Blough nearly defeated the 2019 Bears on Thanksgiving, throwing for 300 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start.
Blough mainly served as a backup quarterback throughout his career and just began his coaching career in the 2024 season. Blough served as the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders, helping develop star rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels is the leading candidate for offensive rookie of the year after leading the Commanders to an NFC championship appearance.
As a result of Daniels’ success, Blough is garnering attention from multiple NFL teams for a coaching position, including the Chicago Bears.
Chicago Bears head coach has ties to David Blough
Johnson has ties with the former Lions quarterback as Blough played for the Lions on two separate stints when Johnson was in Detroit, most recently in 2023.
Blough definitely knows Ben Johnson’s offensive scheme and would be a great fit for Bears passing game coordinator. Having a former NFL quarterback as a passing game coordinator could be a benefit, especially for Caleb Williams.
It’s worth noting that Blough has only been a coach for only one season. The fact that he’s gaining multiple chances to interview for other coaching positions already is very impressive. There is a good chance that Blough will get an offensive coordinator role in a few years.
Blough potentially joining the Bears would add more wealth and knowledge to an already impressive coaching staff.
