Chicago Bears hire recently fired head coach as defensive coordinator
On Monday, the Chicago Bears hired Ben Johnson away from the Detroit Lions to be Matt Eberflus’ replacement as head coach.
The former Lions’ offensive coordinator has no experience as a head coach, so it was expected that the 38-year-old would look at hiring former head coaches to fill out the Bears’ coaching staff.
The Chicago Bears hired Dennis Allen as DC
Per Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, on Sunday evening, the Bears are set to hire former Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen.
“The Bears are hiring former Saints head coach and respected guru Dennis Allen as their new defensive coordinator,” Rapoport wrote on X. “The favorite to join coach Ben Johnson’s staff since Johnson’s hire, Allen adds experience and a top-notch DC to Chicago.”

Allen has previous experience as a defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos (2011) and Saints (2015-2021).
Allen has a 26-53 record as a head coach. He was fired by New Orleans in 2024 following a 2-7 start. Allen’s defenses ranked in the top 10 in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2017.
The Bears hired Declan Doyle as OC

The Bears decided to add a youthful coach on the offensive side of the ball. Per the NFL Network, Chicago is set to hire Denver Broncos tight ends coach Declan Doyle as Caleb William’s fourth offensive coordinator in two offseasons.
“The Bears are hiring Broncos TE coach Declan Doyle as their new offensive coordinator, per me and Tom Pelisserio.” Rapoport posted. “A key hire for coach Ben Johnson, Doyle is a rising offensive mind. At just 28, he’s now an OC.”

Doyle coached tight ends under head coach Sean Payton in 2023 and 2024.
