Your correct, on June 8, 1967, after more then 8 HOURS of close-in aerial surveillance, Israel then commenced to slaughter 34, and injure 174 American Servicemen of the USS Liberty, then DENIED all responsibility for it’s INTENTIONAL attempt to sink the Liberty, and silencing the on-board crew (by trying to kill ALL of them!)
PROBLEMS: The ship was tougher then expected, the men were tougher then expected and displayed unexpected level of courage and valor and determination throughout the 2+ hour attack. (This was a intelligence gathering ship, NOT a combat vessel)
Their were survivors, who were later THREATENED by THIS gov’t (under LBJ Orders) to remain silent.
At the time, weeks after the event, when it could no longer be hidden effectively, Israel mockingly admitted it by calling it a “mistaken identity” mishap!
Of course, over the years, especially in the last 20+ years, the crew of the Liberty have come public with their story, as has the audio recording of the Israeli pilot who REFUSED to fire in the Liberty when he radioed it back to the Israeli Air Command that it was an AMERICAN ship. This Israeli pilot was ARRESTED upon landing for REFUSING to fire on what he clearly called out as an American, and Ally ship!
